Tom & Nancy's Visit

Prior to our weekend in Valencia, Steve and I were able to spend the week with Steve's parents, right here in Madrid. Tom and Nancy are newly retired and were able to celebrate the occasion with a Mediterranean cruise. They visited cities like Venice, Athens, Rome, Ephesis, and others, and seemed to have enjoyed a great trip. After the cruise ended in Barcelona, Tom and Nancy took the AVE to Madrid to spend the week with us. Such a nice visit!

Though they were understandably tired from their two weeks at sea, we packed a lot into their visit, and they were great company. Tom and Nancy saw the three main museums: the Prado, the Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen. We also were able to visit the Palacio Real with them, which I love. When we visited the Palacio last time, we didn't go inside the Armory. The Palacio has an amazing collection of armor, which the audioguide will happily tell you about for about an hour! A bit overdone for armor, no? [Note that Tom has become a fan of Europeans' use of "no?" at the end of sentences, to make them into questions. It is quite fun, no?] Despite the long-winded armor description, it was a fun visit.

The four of us were able to travel to Segovia for a day-trip on Wednesday. We took the high-speed train, and arrived in Segovia in 25 minutes. Easy! The town is about 60 miles northwest of Madrid, and is a beautiful old walled city. We were able to see the old Roman aqueduct, which was impressive. I had no idea it was so large. Apparently, it has only been repaired once, in all this time. Very cool!

In addition to the aqueduct, we saw Segovia's beautiful cathedral:

and the Alcazar, a very old Spanish fortress/castle, from which we had great views.

We finished the visit off with a great lunch, and rushed off in time for Steve and I to attend our 7pm class. A productive day!

We had a great visit with Tom and Nancy and were sad to see our first wave of visitors leave. Steve and I are solo for awhile, until a new round of visitors arrive in December. We're off to Rome on Saturday, and then we need to start booking our next few weeks of travel. We're having such a great time. We certainly do miss you though!
